President Graham welcomed members and today’s speakers Nigel and Alexandra Lloyd Jones.

Brian Lamerton introduced Nigel and Alexandra Lloyd Jones to present “Driving Safely in Winter” on behalf of the Gloucestershire Older Drivers Forum

In a very well co ordinated double act Alexandra and Nigel gave a comprehensive and thought provoking talk on how drivers, especially those of an age group such as our members and partners, could be better prepared to drive safely particularly during the Winter season given that nearly 90% of collisions are due to human error.

We were told that there are three main elements to any driving scenario which we can influence namely, driving ability, vehicle preparedness and journey planning. Each element was then expanded giving statistics, useful information and tips on how drivers can deal with a decline in driving skills as a natural aspect of ageing. The talk dealt with issues such as eyesight, reactions, regular vehicle maintenance, especially on low mileage usage and what essential equipment we should have in our vehicles. Journey planning was also covered in great detail with useful information on the various internet apps that provide road and traffic updates.

We were also given information on The Mature Driver reviews that are available and particular emphasis was placed on the need for all drivers to+ keep themselves up to date on the Highway Code.

In conclusion Alexandra and Nigel advised that they had brought copies of their talk and other useful information available in the bar area following the meeting.

Following many questions from the floor the president called on Peter Lodge to give the vote of thanks. Peter congratulated them both on an excellent if somewhat worrying talk and members showed their appreciation with a hearty round of well earned applause.
